Description: Academic Research sessions focus on original research in which higher education teaching and learning methods, materials and characteristics are assessed and evaluated. The topic is broad enough to appeal to a large variety of disciplines and relates to the mission of ISETL. This is a 50-minute session.
Session Criteria: The following criteria will be considered when reviewing proposals for Academic Research sessions:
- Does the proposal make a contribution to the academic community in terms of teaching, an innovative program, or a theoretical perspective?
√ Does the author identify how the questions being investigated contribute to research or practice?
√ To what extent does the research suggest and explore creative and original concepts?
- Is this presentation likely to be interesting to ISETL members?
√ Does the proposal show that the topic is broad enough to embrace more than those in one specific discipline?
√ Does the proposal reveal plans to help participants see how the ideas are applicable to their respective fields?
√ Does the proposal focus on the mission of ISETL?
√ Does what is proposed support the purpose of the conference?
- Is the mode of presentation appropriate to support the author's message?
√ Does the proposal demonstrate that the modes of presentation used support the content being presented?
√ Does the proposal show that the author has developed activities that get the audience actively involved in the session?
√ Does the proposal illustrate planned activities that help the audience make connections with the ideas being presented?
- Are the research methods (e.g., design, procedures, analyses) appropriate?
√ Are the research questions clearly identified?
√ Is the methodology appropriate for the research?
√ Are the methods supported by the perspectives or theoretical framework?
√ Are the data sources adequate and appropriate for the research?
√ Are quantitative and/or qualitative data utilized in appropriate ways to answer the research questions?
- Is the proposal well written?
√ Does the author present an organized, coherent proposal that utilizes the standard conventions of grammar, punctuation and spelling?
√ Does the author present his/her ideas in a logical manner that makes it easy for the reader to follow?
- Does the proposal illustrate an appropriate knowledge of the literature?
√ Does the proposal reveal appropriate literature to support the content being presented?
√ Does the proposal clearly articulate the theories or ideas that are driving the study?
- Are the conclusions well supported?
√ Does the proposal provide conclusions that are well supported with examples that are specific and relevant?
√ Does the proposal show that the author's position is an appropriate conclusion based on the evidence being presented?
√ Do the results and/or findings address the research questions?
√ Are the conclusions consistent with the findings?
Final Check: Before submitting proposals, authors should review the questions below. Check to see if the proposed session is appropriate for the ISETL conference and the proposal is ready for the blind review process.
