Return on Ritual: Online Community Building Activities

Research indicates the value a sense of belonging has to academic engagement, learner autonomy, empowerment and achievement (Eng, 2017; Freeman, 2007; Dweck, 2016; OECD, 2014; Pink, 2009). But, how do we create a sense of belonging in the virtual world? This interactive workshop converts dreaded ‘ice breakers’ into ritualized learning spaces essential during times of disruption, complexity and ambiguity. The facilitators share community building exercises that are responsive to learner positions, needs and goals (Boyko-Head, 2018). Especially designed for virtual classrooms, ritualized activities deepen learning, strengthen community and build confidence through risk-filled play and play-filled risk. This workshop will help participants think differently, learn flexibly and teach creatively.
